Choreographer, Movement & Creative Director

Akira Uchida is a choreographer, movement director and creative director originally from Ottawa, Canada, and now based in NYC.

Growing up with both parents as fitness instructors during the peak of the early ’90s aerobics craze, I developed a deep love for high-energy dance music. In tandem with this musical influence, groove has become a primary element in my work. I believe it’s a powerful tool for shared experience, fostering connections among people from diverse backgrounds and emphasizing our inherent oneness.

With movement being the central medium for my work, I’m drawn to how it intersects with other creative fields such as film, animation, fashion, and photography. I’m captivated by the “middle space”—the tension between opposing ideas, or the convergence of many. This middle space allows me to explore the tension in queer experience, mixed-race identity, masculinity and femininity, and broader questions of time and evolution.

My work has been featured in FACT MAG, Nowness and Dance Magazine – working with artists such as HAAi, Saint Levant, Indochine, Flyana Boss, Leon Vynehall and the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver. I’ve also worked with fashion brands such as Reebok, Nike, Juicy Couture, Private Policy, Lu’u Dan & Priscavera.

Outside of my time working on projects in NYC, I’m a board member at Share The Movement, a non-profit dedicated to providing opportunity and guidance to young BIPOC dancers.
