In the Studio

As a movement artist, I’m passionate about developing a distinct, recognizable choreographic language that resonates across the various mediums of my work. I love exploring and pushing the possibilities of movement in its pure form, before it gains the added context and meaning of a larger project. Much of my creative process unfolds in the studio, where I experiment with fresh ideas—both physical and abstract—on my own and in collaboration with a group of dancers. Below, you’ll find highlights from my ongoing in-studio research, featuring both stills and moving images of my work.

Groove

Research & Development

Inspired by the transformative impact of my experiences in the underground clubbing scene, I began a systematic exploration of Groove—investigating not only its powerful healing qualities but also its defining features and technical parameters. These formal features shape and define the container (Groove) within which people are able to access experiences of integration and expansion which have a profoundly positive impact on them, just as I have.

I recently led a three-day, self-funded Groove Lab in NYC, where I shared my findings with a group of dancers. Together, we delved into both the physical and philosophical dimensions of groove, enriched by a rigorous movement practice and in-depth group discussions.

Looking ahead, I intend to expand this work beyond the studio. I would like to uncover more information about the physical process the body undergoes when in a state of groove or repetitive bounce and to consult experts in fields like physics, medicine, and nightlife history. This research has become foundational to my choreographic work and I look to continue developing it into something larger over the coming years.

Dance Lab NY

Dance Lab NY is an artist-led organization providing NYC-based dance artists with a week-long residency that includes professional dancers, a rehearsal director, digital support, and a salary, allowing choreographers to develop new work without the pressure of a finished product. In February 2023, I was appointed as a choreographer for DLNY’s Spring Cycle.

The primary objective of my research was to push the boundaries of my choreographic vocabulary and explore more experimental approaches to movement creation. Working with the dancers, I introduced improvisational tasks and in-progress movement material, using processes like compositional deconstruction and transformation filters to evolve these ideas. This resulted in material that was distinctly warped in nature and inherently unique to this lab and group of dancers, serving as a foundation for future pieces rather than a completed work.
